Initially, Arnett agreed to take a baseball scholarship offer from the New Mexico Lobos, but in the summer of 2005, he was awarded a football scholarship.

Throughout his collegiate career, he was a standout player both on the field and in the classroom. He recorded six forced fumbles and was named a first-team Academic All-American in 2008.

He stepped away from football for two years, and under Rocky Long, the head coach of New Mexico, he joined San Diego State as a graduate assistant. He was elevated to linebackers coach in three years.

Calvin Munson, an All-Mountain West pick three times, was one of five players from his linebacker unit to be selected.

He received another promotion in 2018, this time to defensive coordinator. Under his leadership, San Diego State improved by thirty spots from the previous year to rank second in total defense in 2018 and third in 2019.

Arnett took over as Syracuse’s new defensive coordinator on January 11, 2020. His time at Syracuse was brief, though, as on January 22, 2020, Mississippi State hired him to serve as their linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

He would take over a defense that lost seven starters and finished 73rd overall. Arnett interviewed for defensive coordinator positions at major universities like Oregon, LSU, and Texas prior to the 2021 campaign, but he ultimately chose to remain at Mississippi State.

On December 11, 2022, Arnett was appointed Mississippi State’s temporary head coach following Mike Leach’s hospitalization.

On December 15, 2022, Mississippi State announced Arnett as the 35th full-time head coach in school history, removing the interim designation from his title following Leach’s passing. On November 13, 2023, with two games remaining in the regular season, Mississippi State dismissed Arnett.
