Prabhu Ganesan’s Biography

Prabhu Ganesan born 25 December 1956, known professionally as Prabhu, is an Indian actor, businessman, and film producer working primarily in Tamil cinema best known as the son of veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan. He is popularly known as Ilaya Thilagam. He has appeared in more than 215 films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films in lead and supporting roles.

After graduating from Bishop Cotton Boys School in Bangalore, Prabhu worked in film production as an executive producer, working with his uncle and mentor V.C. Shanmugam, who advocated learning the filmmaking process in a disciplined way. Prabhu’s father, actor Sivaji Ganesan, was initially reluctant to offer Prabhu an acting career, but through his work in the industry, he received offers from filmmakers to appear in their films.

After appearing in about 30 films, including 19 with his father, such as Neethibathi (1983), Sandhippu (1983), and Miruthanga Chakravarthi (1983), Prabhu’s career began to decline and he decided to reconsider. Opposed to appearing in films with his father, he began consciously choosing his subjects rather than accepting as many offers as possible.

He then appeared in R.V. Udayakumar’s 100th-anniversary film, Rajakumaran, before appearing in K. Balachander’s romance film, Duet (1994) and Priyadarshan’s Malayalam Era Film (1996), opposing Mohanlal. Prabhu endured another barren period in the late 1990s when several films did poorly after the success of Pancharan Kreach, leading to another image shift from his village’s good-natured role.

In the early 2000s, he turned his back on action movies, opting for family-friendly scripts and working with Ramanarayanan and his T. P. Gajendran is working on a series of films with a “minimum guarantee” of returns.

Prabhu then made another career change and began accepting film offers to play supporting roles instead of leading roles, working with Kamal Haasan and then Rajinikanth in two big budget projects Vasool Raja MBBS (2004) and his own work Chandramukhi (2005).

He has also played other acclaimed supporting roles in Mani Ratnam’s Ravanan (2010) and Aishwarya Dhanush’s 3 (2012) while playing similar roles in Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam films. Sixteen years later, director Sakthi Chidambaram attempted a sequel, Charlie Chaplin 2 (2019), which had nothing in common with the original, including comedy, apart from two male protagonists.

Prabhu married Punitha in 1982 and has two children, Aishwarya Prabhu born in 1984, and Vikram Prabhu born in 1986, who made his acting debut in the 2012 film Kumki. While still married to Punitha, Prabhu had a relationship with actress Khushboo and they got married on 12th September 1993. The couple then decided to separate after four months.
