She developed a passion for acting at a younger age and growing up studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA)

Jackson won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her role as Elizabeth I in the BBC series Elizabeth R. She’s known for her roles in “Mary, Queen of Scots”, Hedda, The Incredible Sarah, and Hopscotch, to mention a few.

She received five Laurence Olivier Award nominations for her West End roles in the films; “Stevie”, “Rose”, “Strange Interlude”, and “Antony and Cleopatra”, among others.

From 1992 to 2015, she took a break from acting to become a politician and was elected as the Labour Party MP for Hampstead and Highgate in the 1992 general election.

From 1997 to 1999, Jackson served as a junior transport minister during the government of Tony Blair.

Following constituency boundary changes, she represented Hampstead and Kilburn in 2010. Jackson stood down at the 2015 general election and returned to acting.
