Pentatonix is an American acapella group with a net worth of US$40 million. The three time Grammy Award winning acapella group have made a name for themselves in the American’s music industry. The primary source of their income stems from their music career; album sales, concerts and tours and YouTube earnings. Who is Pentatonix?

Pentatonix, also known as PTX originally began with three members; Kristin Maldonado (born May 16, 1992), Mitch Grassi (born July 24, 1992) and Scott Hoying(born September 17, 1991). The trio grew up together and were schoolmates at Martin High School in Arlington, Texas.

They first gained attention by the school after they sent their own version of Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé’s ‘Telephone’ to a local radio dhow competition to meet the cast of Glee. Although losing out in the competition, their singing sparked attention by the school and its authorities before hitting YouTube with similar recognition.

Hoying and Maldonado graduated in 2010 and Grassi a year later. Maldonado studied Musical Theatre at the University of Oklahoma while Hoying went to study Popular Music Performance at the University of Southern California (USC). During his USC days, he became a member of an acapella group by name SoCal VoCals. Hoying found out about The Spin Off from a SoCal VoCals member, Ben Bram (arranger, producer and sound engineer) and encouraged them to participate in the competition.

Without hesitation, they came to a consensus and met Avi Kaplan (born April 17, 1989) through a mutual friend before finding Kevin Olusola (born October 5, 1988) on YouTube through one of his viral “celloboxing” videos.

Just a day to the Season Three auditions, the group met. They successfully auditioned and went on to the crowned the season’s winner for 2011. Scott Hoying suggested the name Pentatonix with an “X” as it was more appealing while also representing a musical scale of five notes as well as representing the quintet. The five members of the group derive their influence from pop, dubstep, electro, reggae, hip hop and classical music.

The group visited the administrative offices of The Trevor project during The Sing-Off. The Trevor Project is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1998. It is the country’s leading organization enthralled on suicide prevention efforts among the LGBTQ+ youth.

While there, they all shared their ordeal of bullies and overcoming bullying and recorded a public service announcement. A 60 second spot was aired during the finale of The Spin Off but parts of the pre-recorded message was edited especially concerning LGBTQ references.
