Parris was born in Hopkins, South Carolina in the United States of America to Mitchelle Green and Cookie Green. She shares the same parents with four brothers and a sister.
Until her sophomore year, she attended Hopkins, South Carolina’s Lower Richland High School.
Before enrolling in and graduating from the Juilliard School, she was accepted into the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts & Humanities, where she completed the 11th and 12th grades.

In 2010, Parris appeared on television for the first time in a supporting role on The Good Wife. She was given the recurring part of Dawn Chambers in the AMC drama series Mad Men in 2012. She portrayed Mad Men’s first significant African American character.
Parris’ breakout performance came in the independent film Dear White People in 2014. Parris started appearing in the comedic series Survivor’s Remorse on Starz later that year.
Parris later went on to feature in Spike Lee’s satirical drama Chi-Raq, which was released in 2015. For this movie, she was nominated for her first NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture.
She co-starred with David Oyelowo in Five Nights in Maine and played the lead in Leila Djansi’s film Where Children Play.
She portrayed R&B/Jazz s inger Miki Howard in the film The Miki Howard Story later in 2015. In the historical drama movie Buffalo Soldier Girl, about a woman who recruited and served as a Buffalo Soldier during the African American Post-Civil War era while dressing as a male, Parris was cast as the movie’s main character.
She played Detective Pamela Rose in a recurring role on the Fox prime-time soap drama Empire in 2017. She was chosen for the lead role in the CBS drama pilot Murder in early 2018.
She also co-starred in Barry Jenkins’ drama film If Beale Street Could Talk, which was based on James Baldwin’s book of the same name.
She portrayed Kaneisha, the main character, in the New York Theatre Workshop’s 2018 Off-Broadway production of Slave Play.
In the Disney+ series WandaVision, Parris portrays Monica Rambeau as an adult. Monica Rambeau was first introduced in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Captain Marvel. In the July 2023 film The Marvels, she will play the same part once more.
