But then Who is Stan Lee? Stan Lee is an American creator, editor, publisher, and producer of comic books. Stanley Martin was born on December 28, 1922, and died on November 12, 2018. He rose through the ranks of Timely Publications, the family-run business that later evolved into Marvel Comics. He oversaw the company’s transformation from a tiny publishing company division to a multi-media giant that dominated the comics and film industries during his 20 years as its chief creative director.
The superheroes Spider-Man, the X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Ant-Man, the Wasp, the Fantastic Four, Black Panther, Daredevil, Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch, and Black Widow are just a few of the well-known Marvel characters he co-created. He particularly collaborated closely with co-authors and illustrators Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby.
The introduction of these and other superheroes during the 1960s contributed to the development of a more realistic aesthetic in superhero comics. Lee challenged the Comics Code Authority’s restrictions in the 1970s, which unintentionally led to changes to its rules. In the 1980s, he attempted to expand Marvel franchises into various media, with varying degrees of success.
Lee remained Marvel’s public face even after he left the corporation in the 1990s. He frequently made cameo appearances in Marvel-based films and television shows, for which he obtained an executive producer credit, which helped him surpass Steve Jobs as the highest-grossing person in movie history.
He continued his independent artistic endeavors far into his 90s, passing in 2018. Lee was admitted to the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995 and the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame for the comic book industry in 1994, respectively. He received the National Medal of Arts from the NEA in 2008.
