Santi Aldama is one of the most popular and richest Spanish basketball player who was born on January 10, 2001 in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. On August 5, 2019, Aldama announced his intention to relocate towards America. United States and play college basketball for Loyola-Maryland which is a mid-major school which is part of the Patriot League. Aldama was attracted to the school as his father was a coach assistant to Ivo Simovic, and also because of Aldama’s dream of a career in business. He found himself at ease when he visited Loyola-Maryland in the month of June. As a four-star prospect and a top-major talent Aldama’s choice to join an intermediate-major school was a shock to many analysts. Since his first introduction to the sport of basketball Aldama was a player for Canterbury Basketball Academy in Las Palmas and later chose to stay in the city despite being offered by bigger clubs such as FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Gran Canaria. In the Spanish Under-16 Championships, he averaged 18.9 pointsand 5.1 rebounding, and 3.6 assists per match playing for Canterbury along with Oumar Ballo. He was instrumental in helping his team achieve an impressive third place finish, which was in the third place behind FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. In the year 2018, Aldama played on loan for the FC Barcelona under-18 team at Ciutat de L’Hospitalet qualifiers in the Adidas Next Generation Tournament.
Aldama was a part of the debut on the national team of Spain in the 2017 FIBA U16 European Championship in Podgorica, Montenegro, averaging nine points and 5.4 rebound per game. Aldama led his team to winning gold in the 2019 FIBA U18 European Championship in Volos, Greece, averaging 18 points, 7.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.3 blocks, and 1.9 steals per game. Aldama was named the tournament’s most important athlete (MVP) and was also named tournament most valuable player (MVP) along with his co-player Usman Garuba as part of the All-Star Five.
Aldama missed the first three months of his freshman season with a knee injury that required surgery. He made his collegiate debut for Loyola–Maryland on February 1, 2020, scoring 11 points in 17 minutes in a 79–73 win over Navy. Aldama was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week three times in the span of four weeks. At the end of the regular season, he was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team. On March 3, he scored a season-high 23 points in a 78–75 loss to Lehigh in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament.
