Real Reason Why Otiko Afisa Djaba Turned Down Akufo Addo’s Appointment As An Ambassador Revealed

Do you recall when former National Women’s Organizer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Otiko Afisa Djaba flatly turned down Nana Akufo Addo’s appointment as an ambassador to Italy?

Mrs Djaba who later became the minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection famously refused the appointment with the excuse that she wants to bow out of politics to take care of her ailing husband.

The biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) however skewed their own propaganda by alleging that there was more to Otiko’s resignation than meets the eye. In a statement they released to that effect, the party claimed Otiko Afisa Djaba had a verbal altercation with the President Nana Akufo Addo when he requested that all members of the party throw their weight behind Freddy Blay.

Akufo Addo reportedly wasn’t happy with the conduct of Mrs. Djaba and therefore decided to reshuffle and send her straight to Italy as an ambassador. The move did not please the maverick female politician and consequently, she decided that enough was enough, she was quitting for good.

A portion of that report by the NDC reads: ‘Before the NPP congress, Akufo Addo issued a directive to all his appointees to support and vote for Freddy Blay. Otiko defied and ignored that directive, telling Nana Addo, “We are not robots and cannot be pushed about like kids” and went ahead to support Stephen Ntim. Otiko was then summoned to the Flagstaff house after the Koforidua congress hence queried for disobeying the president before Freddy Blay and John Boadu. Otiko got angry and had serious exchanges with the president and Freddie Blay. Out of anger, she told Freddie Blay to stay out of NPP matters and took her bag and angrily walked away.

Otiko’s behavior before the president angered him so he made the decision to reshuffle her out of his government completely but at that moment John Boadu quickly reminded him that Otiko was one of the few Krobo’s in government and thus kicking her out could send bad signals to the Krobos. The Upper East Regional minister was the one originally penciled for the role of ambassador to Italy but a decision was made to rather send Otiko to Italy.’

Since she literally walked away from the political limelight, nothing has been heard of Otiko Afisa Djaba. She’s probably taking care of her husband as she made us all believe or perhaps sulking at the treatment meted out to her by her boss, Nana Akufo Addo.
