New Zealand Racing Minister Kieran McAnulty reacted to her death in a post that reads;
“I am very saddened to hear of the passing of jockey Megan Taylor during a race this afternoon. I want to pass on my deepest condolences to Megan’s family and friends, and to all those in the industry who worked alongside her and knew her.”
Megan Taylor was an apprentice jockey. An apprentice jockey is a thoroughbred, quarterhorse, or appaloosa race rider who has ridden less than one year and less than 45 winners since first being licensed in any racing jurisdiction and meets the requirements and qualifications for a jockey license.
A racing apprenticeship is usually required to become a jockey. The apprenticeship is completed in 48 months.
Apprentice jockeys are paid a flat fee for each race ride as well as 5% of any prize money won by the horse they are riding.
Megan Taylor died in a race fall in Ashburton, New Zealand’s South Island. She was riding Red Orchid in race two when her mount became entangled between two other horses and crashed to the track shortly after 1 p.m. local time. Megan Taylor was hit on the ground by one of the three other horses involved in the fall.
