Meet Paty Cantu’s Parents

Paty Cantú is a Mexican singer, songwriter, and actress who is best known as one of the founding members of the Mexican pop duo Lu.

Paty Cantú was born in Houston, Texas on November 25, 1983, to Armando Cantú and Mercedes Velasco. A few months later, her family moved to Sonora and in 1987 they settled in Guadalajara, Jalisco. At the age of 16, Paty Cantú was passionate about entertainment; She began studying bass and guitar, and eventually left law school to pursue her music career.

Paty Cantú became a member of the Mexican pop duo Lu with Mario Sandoval. The duo rose to fame with hits such as Por Besarte, Una Confusión, and La Vida Después de Ti, and were certified gold and platinum for both records in Mexico and the United States. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2004, produced by Aureo Baqueiro, producer of artists such as Natalia Lafourcade, Sin Bandera, Kabah, and Moenia, and was successful in Mexico and Brazil, where they achieved success.

Her songwriting skills were showcased in the song “Sé” and wrote music for Eiza González and Alejandra Guzmán. After several re-releases of the first album and the second album titled “Álbum”, on August 27, 2007, Mario and Paty Cantu broke up due to artistic reasons, holding their last concert in September 2007.

After the breakup, Paty Cantú began writing songs for her debut album, counting down up to 54 songs before choosing the final 10 songs. In 2008, she was featured in Motel’s “Dos Palabras”, released on August 12, and appeared on the re-release of their second album 17 Bis. Paty Cantú then debuted as a solo artist on October 17 as the opening act for Mexican singer Aleks Syntek, making her debut as a successful solo singer.

In November 2008, Paty Cantú released her first single “Déjame Ir”, which reached the Top 10 on Mexican radio, proving an immediate success, and the video premiered on MTV on November 18. Her album Me Quedo Sola was released on January 27, 2009, under EMI and contains 10 songs, 9 written by her and 1 written by Motel’s Billy Mendez. In just three days of sales, Me Quedo Sola debuted at number 8 on “Lo Mas Vendido” on Mixup, and after a week the album reached number 1. However, on the main Mexican Top 100 Albums chart, it reached number two, behind only Vicente Fernández.

Her second single “No Fue Suficiente” was released on February 21 and the Tim Burton-inspired music video was produced by Esteban Madrazo and premiered on MTV’s “Los 10+ Pedidos”. She began writing songs for Alejandro Fernández, Dulce María’s debut album as well as Alejandra Guzmán’s upcoming greatest hits.

In August 2009, it was announced that Paty Cantú would star in the film Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure as part of the soundtrack to the song Historia Ancestral, to be released on September 4, 2009. It was also announced on her MySpace that her first album will be re-released including new songs such as Muñeca de Papel written by Billy de Motel, Casi Divas with Alfonso Pichardo, singer of Moenia and Mi Amor Destruye with Ballesteros.

Paty Cantú was nominated for Los Premios MTV Latinoamérica 2009 in two categories, one alongside her former bandmate Mario Sandoval and band Sandoval. On September 29, Paty Cantú received two nominations for Premios Oye!, a Mexican Grammy Award for Breakthrough of the Year alongside Alexander Acha, Beto Cuevas, Tush and Victor & Leo and Best Female Solo competing against Fanny Colombian singer Laura Pausini and teammates María José and Natalia Lafourcade.

Paty Cantu’s song “Afortunadamente no eres tu” was used in a MasterCard commercial as well as the Niñas Mal soundtrack. She appeared on the single “The World is Ours” used by Coca-Cola to promote the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The single was included in the album One Love, One Rhythm. In 2018, she released her fourth album, #333. On April 16, 2020, she participated in a charity single for the people of Mexico, titled “Resistiré México”.

Paty Cantú appeared as a musical guest in Rebelde, in the 2nd season of El Show de los Sueños, and in Verano de Amor played by Dulce María but her acting debut came in the 3rd season of the series Mexican El Pantera as María, a car thief and El Pantera’s lover. In 2013, she voiced Gossip Girl in Gossip Girl: Acapulco.
