Kaplansky formed the folk band Cry Cry Cry Cry in 1998 with Dar Williams, Richard Shindell and Richard Shindell. They released an album and toured extensively before parting ways. Her 1999 album Ten Year Night received rave reviews and helped boost her popularity. She also performed on CBS-TV. The Red Thread, her album, features a song that describes her experiences as a New Yorker during 9-11. In coincidentially, Kaplansky and John Gorka sang harmony in August 2001 at a concert held on the World Trade Center plaza.
In the 1990s, she was drawn to music more and more. Colvin, who had already achieved some commercial success at the time, offered to produce an Album for her.
