Walters played for the Ipswich Jets in the Brisbane Rugby League Premiership, the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League, the Canberra Raiders in the National Rugby League, and the Brisbane Broncos in the NRL.

Walters was named the Catalans Dragons’ head coach in 2009. The squad had sixteen victories and sixteen defeats during the 2009 Catalans Dragons season as they advanced to the Super League Grand Final qualifying semifinal and took eighth place overall.

After six victories and twenty-one losses in 2010, the Dragons finished fourteenth (last) overall. After Mal Meninga was forced to step down to take the position of coach of the Australian national rugby league team, Walters was named the head coach of the Queensland State of Origin squad in December 2015.

The Maroons beat New South Wales 2-1 in the series in both 2016 and 2017. New South Wales won the 2018 series 2-1.

Walters made his NRL coaching debut in the 2021 season. His first success came in round 3 at Suncorp Stadium, where the Brisbane Broncos defeated the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 24-0.

Brisbane has a total of seven victories and seventeen defeats by the conclusion of 2021. They placed fourteenth on the NRL ladder but were unable to advance to the finals.

Adam Reynolds, a former captain of the South Sydney Rabbitohs and a talented football kicker, joined Brisbane in 2022 as a halfback and team captain. They finished tenth but missed the finals once more, winning a total of thirteen matches while dropping eleven.

The Battle for Brisbane won 18-12 against the Dolphins, who were led by Walters’ former mentor Wayne Bennett, on March 24 at Suncorp Stadium as part of Brisbane’s five-game winning streak to begin 2023. Walters’ contract with Brisbane was renewed through the 2025 campaign.

Brisbane was in first place on the 2023 league ladder at the completion of round 10, but that position was altered the following week.

By round 25, Brisbane had regained the lead and needed to defeat the Melbourne Storm to win the minor premiership, but by resting eleven of its regular players in that game, Brisbane fell to second place on the 2023 ladder, two weeks behind the minor and major champion Penrith Panthers.

Walters eventually led Brisbane to their first grand final in eight years after a dominant victory against the New Zealand Warriors.

Brisbane trailed 8-0 in the first half of the 2023 NRL Grand Final until scoring a late try to make it 8-6. Brisbane would score three quick tries in the second half to jump out to a 24-8 lead.

Penrith would score three of their own tries in the final 20 minutes, including one with barely three minutes left in the game, to win 26-24.
