McCarthy was chosen as minority leader in January 2019, becoming the first Republican from California to assume the position after the party’s majority was lost in the 2018 midterm elections and Speaker Paul Ryan announced his retirement.
For most of his tenure as majority and minority leader, McCarthy consistently defended former president Donald Trump.

McCarthy endorsed Trump’s bogus rejection of Joe Biden’s victory after he won the 2020 presidential election and took part in efforts to have the results overturned.
McCarthy later denounced the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 and insisted that the 2020 election was fair.
