Tols played at John Wood Community College in Quincy, Illinois in 2009 when he played in thirteen games in the capacity of a pitcher. He was 4-3-2 (win-loss score) 4.87 Earned Run Average (ERA) record, with 44.1 innings pitched during his first year of college. He hit 46 batters, while taking 21 walks and allowed 51 hits.
