He began performing as Johnny Farnham with the nearby band The Mavericks on the weekends while he was still in school in 1964. The group played five songs in total.
Late in 1965, he received an invitation to become the lead vocalist for the string-only band Strings Unlimited, which had a regular gig at a nearby hotel.
They recorded a three-track demo recording in 1966 with Farnham on vocals, Stewart Male on lead guitar, Barry Roy on rhythm guitar, Mike Foenander on keyboards, Joe Cincotta on bass, and Peter Foggie on drums after reaching the state finals of the Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds.
Strings Unlimited supported pop vocalist Bev Harrell on stage in Cohuna on April 29, 1967. Darryl Sambell, Harrell’s manager and then-boyfriend, was taken aback by Farnham’s singing and volunteered to manage him.
After first playing in Sambell’s hometown of Adelaide, Farnham was given a solo record deal with EMI and worked with house producer David Mackay. She produced the light advertising jingle “Susan Jones” for the airline Ansett-ANA.
