As the previous Crown Prince, he had essentially served as president earlier (during the late 1990s) while his father was ill. Khalifa is also the Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).

In 2011, Sheikh Khalifa deployed the UAE’s Air Force and Navy to support the anti-Gaddafi troops, which included NATO, Qatar, Sweden, and Jordan. Sheikh Khalifa suffered a stroke in January 2014 and was reported to be in stable condition after surgery.
