Sarathkumar Ramanathan born on 14 July 1954, is an Indian actor, politician, filmmaker, and singer. He has appeared in over 130 Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada films. He has won two State Film Awards and three Southern Film Fair Awards in Tamil Nadu.

Originally a bodybuilder and later a journalist, R. Sarathkumar started his acting career with the 1986 Telugu film ‘Samajamlo Sthree’. He first played negative roles and later supporting roles before establishing himself as a lead actor in the following years and winning the title of best star and superhero in Tamil cinema.

In 1988, while running a travel agency in Chennai, R. Sarathkumar got the chance to star in and produce the Tamil film Kan Simittum Neram. The film was directed by Kannadasan and co-starred by Karthik and Ambika. In 1989, R. Sarathkumar was spotted by actor Vijayakanth’s personal make-up artist, Raju, who recommended him to the Pulan Visaranai team. Finally, starring R. Sarathkumar in Pulan Visaranai as a villain, the film turned out to be a box-office success.

He won the Cinema Express Award for Best Villain for the role, which brought him more film offers. His next project was K.S. Ravikumar’s Nattamai and Meena and Khushbu, in which he played a dual role. The film was a box office hit and achieved cult status. His performance was highly praised by critics and he won several notable awards such as Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor, Filmfare Award for Best Actor, and Cinema Express Award for Best Actor.

In 2006, he directed and starred in Thalaimagan, his 100th film produced by his wife Radhika under the banner of Radaan Media Works. That film failed at the box office. The following year, he starred in Gautham Vasudev Menon`s Pachaikili Muthucharam, which received positive reviews, but performed poorly on average.

In his early years as an actor, R. Sarathkumar was considered a close friend of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazagam (AIADMK), Jayalalithaa. However, his proximity to Jayalalithaa meant that when the film Nattamai (1994), which was still showing in cinemas in Tamil Nadu, was broadcast by Jayalalitha’s television station JJ TV, R. Sarathkumar decided to take her to see it in person at her residence. caused a huge problem with the videotape he gave to her.

He asked both his Jayalalithaa and JJ TV for an explanation but to no avail. The ruling party reacted predictably, using every forum to attack R. Sarathkumar. For his part, recognizing that the public is behind him, he announced his decision to join Rajinikanth in support of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) alliance.

R. Sarathkumar founded his own political party All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi on 31 August 2007. Shortly before the 2011 general election, R. Sarathkumar joined the AIADMK coalition and his party was allocated two seats. His party ran as part of the AIADMK coalition and won two parliamentary constituencies, Tenkasi and Nangneri. R. Sarathkumar won from Tenkasi and Ernavur A. Narayanan won from Nanguneri. In January 2016, Ernavur A. Narayanan was expelled from the party for violating party rules and engaging in anti-party activities.

In the 2016 general election, Sarath Kumar lost to DMK candidate Anitha R. Radhakrishnan in the Tiruchendur constituency. In November 2017, R. Sarathkumar said in an interview with The Hindu:
“I have been closely associated with AIADMK for the past ten years. In fact, I was even identified as the party’s propaganda secretary. No. Now I want to focus on my party and be seen as a strong candidate for prime minister.”
