Eric Garcetti Parents: Meet Gil Garcetti And Sukey Garcetti – Eric Garcetti is the 42nd and current mayor of Los Angeles, having taken office in 2013. He was elected as a member of the Democratic Party in 2013 and was re-elected in 2017.

Garcetti, a former member of the Los Angeles City Council, was City Council President from 2006 to 2012. He is the city’s first elected Jewish mayor and its second Mexican American mayor in a row.

His own father, Massimo Garcetti, a judge who immigrated to Mexico from Italy and was hanged during the Mexican Revolution, was born in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico, and was brought to the United States as a child. Gil’s mother was one of nineteen children born to a Mexican mother who was born in Arizona and a Sonoran father who was born in Sonora, Mexico.

Gil Garcetti graduated from South Los Angeles’ George Washington High School in 1959. Since then, Washington Preparatory High School has taken its place.

Gil Garcetti holds a law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a bachelor’s degree in management from the University of Southern California.

Gil Garcetti worked for the office for over twenty years prior to taking the helm as Los Angeles County District Attorney, holding trial prosecutor and managerial positions before eventually rising to the position of chief deputy district attorney for his predecessor, Ira Reiner (district attorney from 1984 to 1992). Soon after Garcetti’s 1988 reelection, Reiner demoted him.

In the 1992 election, Gil Garcetti ran against his former adviser. Both candidates claimed their rival was dishonest during the campaign. Garcetti, according to Reiner, was “not to be trusted in a position of power” and “was a secretive” individual.
