Air was cast as Charlie Charlton after first appearing as an extra on the CBBC program Byker Grove at the age of 10. A producer then requested Air to go on an audition.

Byker Groove! was founded in 1994 by Air and her co-stars Jayni Hoy and Vicky Taylor. The group’s debut hit, “Love Your Sexy,” peaked at number 48 on the UK Singles Chart.

At the age of 15, Air relocated to London and continued the band as Crush with Hoy. The band’s 1996 singles “Jellyhead” and “Luv’d Up” reached the UK charts at positions 50 and 45, respectively, although their debut studio album Teenage Kicks did not.
