Devin Hester attended Palm Beach Gardens High School and then Suncoast High School where he played cornerback, wide receiver, return specialist, and running back football. He was recognized by his SuperPrep.com as a top Florida and Parade high school candidate and named to the All-American team.

After high school, Devin Hester attended the University of Miami and played for the Miami Hurricanes football team from 2003-2005. In his sophomore year in 2004, he was named to the All-American First Team by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and Sporting News before being nationally recognized as the returner of kicks. His ability to escape pursuers by jabbing sideways made him one of the most dangerous return specialists in the country.

Devin Hester was the first football player in recent Miami Hurricanes history to play as a member of special teams, offensive teams, and defensive teams. He was known as “Hurricane Hester” by his fans and teammates. In his junior season, Devin Hester threw 326 yards on 19 punts and returned 3 touchdowns, 389 yards on 15 kickoffs and scored 1, and caught 4 passes.

He finished 3 seasons with 41 punt returns for 638 yards, 40 kick returns for 1,019 yards, 24 carries for 160 yards, 10 receptions for 196 yards, 11 tackles, 1 sack, and 5 interceptions for 57 12 return yards.

Devin Hester began his professional National Football League career with the Chicago Bears, who were the 57th overall pick in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. The team originally drafted Devin Hester as a cornerback but intended to play him as a return specialist following the retirement of Jerry Azmer and the departure of Bobby Wade. The team’s decision to draft Hester initially drew criticism from fans and sports analysts.
