Ward gained 3,152 yards (6.9 yards per carry) and 39 touchdowns on 460 rushes throughout his collegiate career. He also grabbed seven receptions for 96 yards (13.7 yards per carry).
During 20 games at Fresno State, he ran for 197 yards (5.5 yards average) and scored 11 touchdowns for a total of 1,091 yards. He also caught three receptions for 49 yards (16.3 yards average).
Even though Ward had a broken right hand when he played, he was declared academically ineligible to play at Fresno State in 1998 and went on to earn Freshman All-America honors the following year.
A knee injury limited him to just seven appearances for the Bulldogs in 2000. When he was once more declared ineligible to play in 2001 and 2002 owing to academics, his tenure at Fresno State came to an end.
When Ward transferred to Ottawa University in Kansas for his senior year, he ran for 2,061 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 7.8 yards per carry (263 attempts) in 2003, setting NAIA single-season records. had 47 yards in ten games at Ottawa on four receptions (11.8 yards per reception on average).
With the 235th overall choice in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft, Ward was chosen by the New York Jets. The Jets released Ward on September 5, 2004.
With 125 touches and 602 yards gained in the air, Ward had a strong season in 2007, he averaged 4.8 yards per carry and scored three touchdowns. On March 14, 2008, the Giants re-signed Ward.
Ward, along with his teammates Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs, were nicknamed Earth, Wind, and Fire in jest because of their performance in the backfield in 2008.
In a 34–28 overtime victory over the Carolina Panthers on December 21, 2008, Ward led the Giants’ running attack with 215 rushing yards, securing home-field advantage for the 2009 NFL Playoffs.
With 1,025 yards at the end of the season, he and teammate Brandon Jacobs became the seventh duo to carry for a thousand yards in a single campaign. The Giants’ offensive line’s superior run blocking is credited with both running backs’ good performances. In addition to being a player for the Giants, Ward lived in Weehawken, New Jersey.
On March 2, 2009, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Ward. He inked a $17 million, four-year contract. For the Buccaneers in the 2009 season, he ran 114 times for 409 yards and one touchdown. August 31, 2010, saw the removal of Ward from the team.
Ward was signed by the Houston Texans on September 4, 2010. Ward took to Twitter on July 3, 2012, to announce his retirement.
