In the Chicago media market, Wills started his on-air broadcasting career by covering sports for radio stations WMAQ and WMVP. From 1991 until 1995, he worked as the radio voice for the Class-A Kane County Cougars, where he held his first play-by-play role.
Wills worked as John Rooney’s backup and pre- and post-game analyst for White Sox radio broadcasts from 1997 through 2004.
He co-hosted a daily sports talk radio show during the same time period, hosted a local cable television sports show, hosted the pre- and post-game radio broadcasts for Notre Dame basketball and football, and provided radio play-by-play for the basketball team at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC).
The Tampa Bay Rays replaced Paul Olden and Charlie Slowes, the franchise’s original radio broadcast duo, with Wills and Andy Freed before the 2005 season.
The day before he passed away, on March 4, 2023, Wills called the final Rays game, a spring training matchup against the New York Yankees. Wills was honored by the Irish-American Baseball Hall of Fame in 2016.
