Danilo Pereira Biography

When Danilo Pereira was five years old, his family relocated to Portugal. Three clubs in the Lisbon region were where he played youth football before completing his development with Benfica.

Parma in Italy was able to sign Pereira for free after Benfica decided not to offer him a professional contract.

His first Serie A appearance came on December 21, 2011, when he came on as a late substitute in a 3-3 home draw against Catania. He spent the second half of the 2010–11 season on loan to Aris in Greece.

Pereira was loaned out again in 2012-13, this time to Roda in the Eredivisie, where he was first choice to help his team narrowly avoid relegation.

Pereira returned to Portugal on August 1, 2013, signing with Martimo. He made his Primeira Liga debut 17 days later, in a 2-1 home win over his former club Benfica, and scored his first goal on December 19 in a 2-2 draw with Braga.

Pereira agreed to a four-year contract with Porto on July 2, 2015, for a transfer fee of €4.5 million, the highest sale in Martimo’s history, with a €40 million buyout clause. After winning the “Drago de Ouro” award in October 2016, he was named Porto’s footballer of the year.

Pereira was named midfielder of the month in the Primeira Liga in September 2017, a feat he repeated in December. He sustained a calf injury during a League Cup game against Sporting CP on January 24, 2018, and was sidelined for several months.

Pereira joined Paris Saint-Germain on a one-year loan for a reported fee of €4 million, with a conditional obligation to buy at the end of the season for €16 million, on October 5, 2020.

He made his debut 15 days later, in a 2-1 home loss to Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League group stage. His Ligue 1 debut came the same month, in a 4-0 rout of Dijon at the Parc des Princes.

Danilo Pereira chose to represent Portugal on a global scale. He was a member of the under-20 team that finished second at the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Colombia, appearing in all seven games (six completed) and scoring in the 2-0 semi-final victory over France.

On March 31, 2015, Pereira made his senior international debut, replacing fellow debutant Bernardo Silva after 62 minutes of a 0-2 friendly defeat to Cape Verde in Estoril.

Manager Fernando Santos also chose him for the UEFA Euro 2016 squad, and he scored his first goal in the final warm-up game, a 7-0 victory over Estonia in Lisbon on June 8. In the finals in France, he made five appearances for the champions.
