Carolyn Leonhart was the daughter of Jay Leonhart, a composer and bassist, and Donna Leonhart. She was born in New York City 10 July 1971. At her father’s gigs, she was exposed to music at an early age. She saw him perform with famous singers like Sarah Vaughan and Mel Torme. Leonhart was a young singer on commercials. Leonhart attended The High School of Music & Art, New York City. She sang for four years in the school’s Gospel Choir. She also performed on the television show “It’s Showtime At The Apollo” while at school. She would sing for hours at home, while her brother and father played jazz standards. She was in her senior year and won the Lena Horne High School Jazz Vocalist Competition.
Leonhart, along with other members from the Swiss Percussion Ensemble, formed Lyn Leon. This pop/lounge band made many successful European tours and released the album Glass Lounge in Germany. Lyn Leon toured in the fall 2004 with Al Jarreau, a jazz singer. Leonhart stated that “Improvising alongside Al Jarreau was one the most amazing experiences of my lifetime.” It allowed me to express myself creatively and opened up new avenues of creativity. Leonhart sang on three international tours and two albums as a backup vocalist for Steely Dan between 2000 and 2007. In 2009 and 2011, she performed with Steely Dan again. She sings lead vocals on “Dirty Work” with Steely Dan’s female backing vocalists Cindy Mizelle, and La Tanya Hall.
Leonhart met Wayne Escoffery in New York Jazz Club in 2002. Escoffery is a London-born jazz saxophonist. They began to date when they had some time between their busy touring schedules. They were married in Manhattan on 17th January 2004. They are now divorced.

Carolyn Leonhart, born July 10, 1971, is a jazz singer. She is the daughter of Jay Leonhart, a jazz bassist, and Michael Leonhart’s sister. She has been a backup vocalist for Steely Dan during several tours and recordings.
Leonhart returned to New York in 1994 and began singing in jazz clubs. She came third in the Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition that year. Critics said that her selection of “Nobody Else but Me”, and “Day Dream” was bold. However, she needed more control and a more focused delivery.
