Bob McGrath Children: Did He Have Children? – In 1954, Bob McGrath graduated from the University of Michigan’s School of Music.
He was a member of the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club and the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta, where he washed dishes while fraternity brother David Connell waited tables at fraternity events, a connection that Connell would use when Sesame Street casting began.
He was drafted into the United States Army after graduation and spent two years in Germany booking and performing with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra.
McGrath received a Master of Music degree in Voice from Manhattan School of Music in 1959.
From 1960 to 1964, he collaborated with Mitch Miller and was the featured tenor on Miller’s NBC-TV singalong series Sing Along with Mitch. He sang on Walt Kelly’s album Songs of the Pogo.
McGrath rose to prominence in Japan as a recording artist in the mid-1960s, releasing a string of successful albums of Irish and other folk songs and ballads sung in Japanese.
When he appeared on the game shows To Tell the Truth in 1966 and I’ve Got a Secret in 1967, he used this aspect of his career as the basis for his “secret.”
McGrath was a regular cast member on Sesame Street from 1969 to 2016, portraying Bob Johnson.
McGrath, along with series matriarch Susan Robinson, played by Loretta Long, was one of the two longest-running human characters on the show since its inception.
When promoting Sesame Street on that network, a Noggin segment proclaimed Bob’s four decades.
Sesame Workshop announced in July 2016 that McGrath would not return to the show for its 47th season due to re-tooling, but the company did state that McGrath would continue to represent the Workshop at public events.
Later, Sesame Workshop announced that they were in talks to bring him back. Sesame Workshop has stated that he will continue to represent Sesame Street.
McGrath was a regular on Telemiracle, a telethon broadcast annually on CTV outlets in Saskatchewan, Canada, for 38 years. His final regular appearance on Telemiracle was in 2015, and the show’s performers paid tribute to him.
In 2018, he made a special appearance. The Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Lynda Haverstock, awarded him the Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan for this work on March 3, 2006.
In 2013, the Premier of Saskatchewan, Brad Wall, presented him with the Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award.
He was named after Irish patriot Robert Emmet. As a child, he used to sing for his family while his mother played the piano.
His mother entered him in the Roxy Theater’s Amateur Program, and he came in second place. Marquette High School awarded him a diploma.
