Early Life & Education

He was raised in Minnesota’s Chaska and Carver cities. In his adolescent years, Lindell’s addiction to gambling started to take hold. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota, but he left after only a few months. In his 20s, Lindell developed a cocaine addiction and started using it often. After he transitioned to crack cocaine in the 1990s, this addiction got worse. Lindell was also running up debt from gambling. His house was foreclosed upon and his wife filed for divorce as a result of the accumulation of his addictions between the 1980s and 1990s. In 2009, Lindell said that he became sober through prayer.

Career

In Carver County, Minnesota, in the 1980s, Lindell established and ran a number of small companies, including carpet cleaning, food carts, and a few pubs and restaurants. The My Pillow pillow, created by Lindell in 2004, is filled with interlocking pieces of shredded foam. The company was expanded by Lindell into a manufacturing enterprise in Minnesota. Due to a trend of customer complaints, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) removed My Pillow’s accreditation in 2017 and reduced its rating to an F. The BBB highlighted a buy one, get one free promotion that continued and hence represented the product’s regular price, not a discount or freebie. “Naturally, I am profoundly upset by the BBB’s decision”, Lindell stated in a statement.

Darren was appointed as the company’s chief operational officer by Lindell in 2020, citing his own potential future political ambitions. Some significant retailers ceased carrying My Pillow items in 2021. Although retailers like Kohl’s and Bed Bath & Beyond have said this is due to market research and poor customer demand, Lindell has speculated that this is because of his statements regarding the results of the 2020 United States presidential election.

Under the “Frank” brand, Lindell runs the social network FrankSocial and the video streaming website Frank. Lindell released plans for “Vocl,” an alternative technology social media site, in March 2021. He had been working on it for a while. He defined the website as being distinct from Gab and Parler and being a cross between YouTube and Twitter. Lindell had to change the name of his website to “Frank” as a result of a legal battle with the owner of the “Vocal” domain.  On April 19, 2021, Frank made his debut on the website frankspeech.com. He quickly ran into numerous technical problems, which Lindell attributed to a “massive onslaught.” Frank doesn’t offer any social networking functions and focuses more on providing embedded video streams, such as Absolute Interference, a two-hour documentary that promotes speculations regarding the 2020 election.

According to Lindell, he has invested millions of dollars in the growth of the Frank brand. Invoices taken from a leaked video conference with Lindell’s IT staff and shared by a Salon reporter show that Lindell spent around $936,000 on hardware, labor, and services to launch Frank. Lindell, in the opinion of Jared Holt, an extremist and far-right media researcher at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab, “he was being played by others around him. It costs a lot of money to launch all the different products and businesses Lindell is involved in, whether it’s a social media platform or a faux-documentary movie. To make this stuff, someone is stealing Lindell’s money.” In March 2022, Lindell disclosed to Insider that he was paying Frank more than $1 million a month.
