Billy Connolly was born to Catholic parents William and Mary on November 24, 1942 in Glasgow, Scotland. His mother abandoned him and his older sister Florence when he was four years old, leaving their father to raise them as an engineer in the Royal Air Force. Connolly and his sister were consequently brought up by their aunts in a small tenement. After a while, their father came home, and Connolly endured years of physical and sexual abuse.
Connolly attended St. Peter’s Primary School in his early years before transferring to St. Gerard’s Secondary School. He started to become interested in music at the age of 14. He delivered books by bicycle for John Smith’s Bookshop after graduating.
Later, Connolly worked as a boilermaker at the Alexander Stephen and Sons shipyard after making deliveries for Bilslands’ Bakery. After serving in the latter position for five years, he obtained a job in Nigeria working on the construction of an oil platform.
