All You Need to Know About King Of Dancehall

Dancehall is a popular music genre nowadays. The genre originated in Jamaica in the late 1970s and has since spread to become a favorite among music fans worldwide. Many critics first saw dancehall as a smaller version of reggae than the roots style.

Roots Before the 1970s, reggae had become popular, and dancehall added a stylish new touch to the genre. Bounty Killer, Mr Vegas, and Lady Saw are among the pioneers of dancehall music. The musicians are either making recordings behind the scenes or working in the industry.

Is Vybz Kartel still the King of Dancehall?

Vybz Kartel delivered on his promise to “give them hell from a prison cell,” but is he still the King Of Dancehall? Vybz Kartel, actual name Adidja Palmer, was condemned to life in jail exactly seven years ago, yet to say he’s been absent from the musical world is untrue.

When he first appeared in the early aughts, the premier ghetto superstar led a new trend in Dancehall. Guns Like Mine, New Millenium, and Sen On were just a few of the chart-topping hits that cemented his reputation in the studio and on the streets. After two decades and numerous contributions to the genre, some would say that the statesman has outlived his usefulness.

Timeless

A cursory Google search of the term turns up nothing but the Floating By DJ, and those who question his effect should consider the precedence he set as a high-flying newbie in 2002.

Kartel was named Deejay of the Year at the Stone Love Sound System’s 30th-anniversary party that year, despite having only a few songs to his name. As he recalled in a moment of wordy self-praise, his first order of business set the tone for greater excellence.

“No one has had an impact on dancehall locally or worldwide in the last 20 years like me. I entered the games officially as best new artiste 2002 (by the then JFM [Jamaica Federation of Musicians]) and three years later won deejay of the year, a title that I didn’t lose until badmind stop the awards,” Kartel alleged in an Instagram post.

Nonetheless, commencing a career with a crowning moment is no empty claim, especially in the extremely competitive Dancehall field with its many renowned rulers. There has been at least one candidate for the throne per generation in the genre’s 40-year history. Other vanguards in the kingdom include The Emperor of Dancehall, Shabba Ranks, and “The Prince”, Mr Lexx, but no title has been more disputed than that of the King.

Many outstanding cultural contributors have been regarded as monarchy heirs. King Yellowman was regarded as the people’s champion, having earned his stripes long before the advent of social media measures. In 2009, Sumfest organizers proclaimed Beenie Man King Of The Dancehall, while Sean Paul, the most financially successful Dancehall artist in history, received a nod from Billboard, the recording industry’s industry standard.

Meanwhile, in 2019, Vybz Kartel was recognized by Fox News New York as part of a recurrent feature covering dancehall music and its important musicians, such as Masicka. “He is one of the biggest names in Caribbean music despite being in prison for years, we are talking about the King of Dancehall, Vybz Kartel” said Lisa Evers, a reporter for the newspaper.

Last Man Standing

According to On-Stage host Winford Williams, Billboard’s recognition of Sean Paul was “purely based on numbers [and] nothing about artists creativity”.

Winston ‘Merritone’ Blake, the late veteran producer, musicologist, and sound system operator, weighed in on the matter, saying “There is no one person that is deserving of that title, but if you talking about a popularity contest then the race would be between Beenie Man and Bounty Killer, and you have like the Vybz Kartel and others.”
