Bannatyne joined the Royal Navy in 1964, serving as a junior second-class engineering technician aboard HMS Ganges. During his service, he spent time on the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle. However, after shoving an officer off a boat landing pier, he was dishonorably discharged. Bannatyne thus spent nine months in a military detention center.
Bannatyne’s career began inauspiciously, with him regularly switching between odd jobs. Returning to Clydebank, he studied to become an agricultural vehicle fitter.
