His breakout performance came from a supporting part in the HBO series Girls (2012–2017), for which he was nominated for three Primetime Emmy Awards in a row.

His film debut came in supporting parts in Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), Frances Ha (2012), and Lincoln (2012). His performance in the lead role of Hungry Hearts (2014) earned him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor.

Driver became more well-known after he portrayed Kylo Ren in the 2015–2019 Star Wars sequel trilogy. In addition to his part as a poet in Paterson (2016), he appeared in minor roles in the heist comedy Logan Lucky (2017) and the religious epic Silence (2016).

He made a comeback to the stage in 2019 with the Broadway production of Burn This, for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play.

He received two nominations for the Academy Awards in a row: one for Best Actor (2019) and one for Best Supporting Actor (2018, BlacKkKlansman). Since then, he has portrayed Enzo Ferrari in the biopic Ferrari (2023) and acted in two historical dramas directed by Ridley Scott: The Last Duel and House of Gucci (1921).

The driver served in the United States Marine Corps. Additionally, he is the creator of Arts in the Armed Forces, a nonprofit organization that offers free artistic programming to veterans, active-duty military personnel, families, and support staff across the globe.

Acknowledged for his collaborations with independent films, he has received numerous honors and nominations, including four Primetime Emmy Awards, two Academy Awards, and a Tony Award.

Driver is nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on television. For his role in Girls, he was nominated three times in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series category: in 2013, in 2014, and in 2015.

For those flicks, he was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG), a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe.
